What is Imbolc?
Imbolc marks the beginning of Spring, as the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. It’s a time of rebirth, new beginnings and excitement to see the dreams we ‘seeded’ over the long winter months to come alive. These Imbolc rituals will help you release the heaviness of winter and invite in the fire of Spring.
Falling around August 1 in the Southern Hemisphere, and February 1 in the Northern Hemisphere, this festival is one of the Pagan Sabbats in the Wheel of the Year. Even though the air still feels cold, there’s a shift in the energy at Imbolc!
There’s a special kind of magic in this transition period, where you can sense something exciting looming. With our busy schedules, we can easily forget about the subtle signs of nature’s cycles. But there are clues that Spring is coming!
Many witches and Pagans use this festival to celebrate the goddess of fertility Brigid or for reflecting on the lessons of the season. Whether you identity as a witch yourself, or simply want to feel that fresh energy of rebirth, Imbolc rituals are the time to get in tune with the rhythms of nature and start nourishing yourself for the next cycle!

What does Imbolc represent?
Just like the new growth of plants find their way to the surface in Spring, Imbolc is when we start seeing the beginnings of our plans and dreams that have been gestating within us over winter. Even though the earth may appear dormant still, life is beginning to stir below. Soon we will have flowers and lambs (Imbolc translates to ewe’s milk since it was traditionally when lambs were born), but also ideas, projects, creativity and confidence.
As a time of rebirth, Imbolc is also a perfect opportunity to let any old dreams or identities die. Utilising fire rituals to clear away those past versions of ourselves is especially potent during this Fire Festival, so we can begin again with fresh energy.
The beginning of Spring is when you want to start tweaking and nurturing your dreams. Like a gardener, what ‘weeds’ can you nip in the bud? Which seeds do you want to water the most?
Imbolc Rituals
1. Create an Imbolc altar
Designing a seasonal altar for the beginning of Spring will be your visual reminder of the energy of beginning, and a place for you to reflect on the intentions you set in the other Imbolc rituals here.
Enjoy foraging for your altar decorations and you’ll notice that even though it still feels like winter, there are buds and blossoms pointing to new change on the way! Create a space on a shelf, table or cabinet.
Decorate with:
- Herbs and plants (basil, chamomile, cinnamon, lavender, wattle)
- Yellow, purple and white tones (especially field flowers in these colours!)
- Crystals (amber, amethyst, tigers eye, carnelian, jasper)
- Candles (to represent the return of longer days and fertility)

2. Spring Cleaning Ritual
Cleanse your home and especially your sacred spaces (like your altar or yoga den) with sage or incense to make room for new energy. Open the windows to let in the new Spring air! Start a donation box to weed out (notice all the gardening metaphors?) old memories or clutter. Making space in your body and home will allow you to embrace the burst of new energy coming your way.

3. Imbolc Fire Ritual
As a Fire Festival, candles represent hope since the sun is slowly returning to its strength (after the Winter Solstice six weeks ago, the shortest day of the year), and a spark of fertile, creative energy at this time. New life is being born, and we can have faith that our energy will be restored for new projects.
You could share a dinner over candlelight or fill your bathroom with candles for a delicious ritual bath.
But I love this Fire ritual for cleansing out the old and calling in inspiration, energy and excitement.
- Always start by slowing your breath to ground yourself and come into the present.
- Spend a few moments in quiet meditation, checking in with how your body is feeling after the hibernation period of winter. Consider how rested you feel, and what you learnt about self-care and slowing down.
- Enjoy a ritual cleansing – a shower, bath or simply washing your hands. Imagine letting go of any heaviness or old energy from the winter season and any old habits that won’t serve you in this early Spring transition.
- Dry off and take your journal to your Imbolc altar, or a space in nature to connect to the season around you.
- Cleanse the space with incense or sage. Light your candles on your altar – either a single candle to focus on, or multiple candles to create ambience.
- Gaze into the flame and consider what you’d like to light a fire under for this next cycle. What do you really want? What have you been putting off that you’d like to bring fresh energy to? What are your hopes and dreams for the Spring and Summer?
- Open your journal and title a new page as your Imbolc entry, so you can refer back to it later. Write down your intentions and anything else that came up.
- Close the ritual by grounding your hands on your body, thanking your intuition and blowing out the flame.
Our delicious black & gold journals are the perfect way begin Spring with fresh, inspiring energy.

4. Planting Seeds Ritual
This magical nature ritual is for setting intentions for the growth you want to see come. You’ll need a seedling, off-cut or simply a seed from a fruit or vegetable. You can plant this in a pot, your backyard or another place in nature.
- With all your tools gathered, take a few deep breaths and become present. Bonus points if you’re barefoot.
- As you bury the seed, take a moment to give thanks for the new season arriving. You could even name the seeds for a new dream or intention, such as “as I nurture these seeds, I nurture the part of me that will be braver/prioritises pleasure/calls in wealth.”
- Visualise the seedling blooming to life with vibrant colours or green growth.
- Take a moment to be still and feel the energy. Thank the earth and the elements that will nurture your seed.
Enjoy the excitement of the coming Spring! Sending nurturing, fresh energy your way.
Love,
